BigCommerce provides an 'availability description' which indicates which type of stock it is:
Regularly stocked product (has stock from Turn 14)
Special Order (if Turn 14 sets the status to Special Order via the API)
Back-ordered (if the feature is enabled from the Content tab and the product has reached zero stock)
We also have a Special Order custom attribute which you can turn on/off. You can set these all under your Content tab:
So if you have "Enable Special Order attribute" and "Allow back-orders" turned on it should let your customer know that they can still receive this item once it is available.
